“Behavior is shaped and maintained by its consequences.” - B.F. Skinner

What is Applied Behavioral Analysis?

Applied behavior analysis was developed by B.F. Skinner, to improve socially significant skills of those with developmental disabilities. B.F. Skinner drew upon the theory of behaviorism established by Dr. John Watson. In Applied Behavior Analysis we look at antecedents (what happens right before a behavior occurs), the actual behavior and consequences (what happens right after the behavior occurs). Reinforcement and extinction are the two primary ways in which we can change behavior, by altering the consequences. Behaviors that a person would like to reduce in order to be able to function in an every day environment include; tantrum behaviors, aggressive behaviors (hitting, punching, kicking), property destruction. Applied behavior analysis can also be used to assist employers in changing their employees behavior to increase productivity. Applied behavior analysis is also the ONLY evidenced based science proved to change behavior. Research conducted by O. Ivor Lovass indicated that if intensive ABA services were provided 90% of children with Autism saw substantial improvement in behavior, and 47% of children became indistinguishable among their peers (Thrive Therapy, 2019).
